Raise your hands if you are guilty of buying mini or sample sizes of skincare! Because I am. Every month I spent money to buy at least one mini size skincare products. Sometimes I buy them because I wanted to try before committing to full size. And, sometimes I buy them because I can’t afford the big one. However, I bought them on purpose. I like to try them during traveling so that I don’t have to bring a bulky packaging. So, from now on, I am starting a new series on my blog. This is episode one. What products do I try on the first episode? Keep on reading.
1. Philosophy Purity Made Simple Facial Cleanser
I bought this from Sephora Indonesia located in Bandung for around 12 USD (90 ml/3 fl.oz). At that time, I ran out of travel-size cleanser. A bit pricey for such a small amount of product. Purity Made Simple is 3-in-1 cleanser because we can use it as first cleanser as well as face wash. We can also use it on our face and our eyes. Yes, it is gentle enough to clean our eyes from mascara and eyeshadow. I have tried it on my own and it didn’t sting my eyes. It also says that it can be used to clean makeup brushes. But, I don’t dare to use it on that purpose because it would be such a waste of products.
This cleanser is made from Water, Sodium Lauroamphoacetate, Sodium Trideceth Sulfate, Limnanthes Alba (Meadowfoam) Seed Oil, and Twelve-essential Oil Blend (Including Rosewood, Sandalwood, Sage). It claims to gently cleanse our face while hydrating them. I found that it is indeed hydrating. I have dry skin and my face doesn’t feel tight after cleansing. It also has a soothing scent that for me is very relaxing.
Philosophy says that the Sodium Trideceth Sulfate in this cleanser can pull away make up from skin and dissolve them. Is that mean that I can get a clean face with only one step cleanser? Yes, the advertisement mentions that it can. They suggest us to damp our fully makeup face with water. Then, gently massage the cleanser to our damp face and eyes for 30 seconds. After that, rinse and pat dry. I tried using them to my face when my makeup still on, it really can take away lipstick and eyeshadow, but still I feel insecure because I always do double cleanse.
Overall, I like this cleanser, but it doesn’t prevent me from getting acne during humid days. Am I gonna purchase the big size? I think I will pass. It is also too pricey for me. However, if I ran out of travel-size face wash, I might consider repurchase this product.
2. GLAMGLOW Youthcleanse Daily Exfoliating Cleanser
I forgot the price of this cleanser, but I bought it from an online store. You can also buy it from Sephora. This is a mud cleanser with scrubs that turns into foam when you mix it with water. GLAMGLOW says that it is daily cleanser that gently exfoliate, cleanse, and renew skin. First of all, they are right that it is exfoliating because it has scrubs in it. However, I don’t think that we can use it everyday on am and pm. For me, the scrubs are not that gentle. If I use it everyday, especially am and pm, I would be over-exfoliate. But, that is just me.
The ingredients of this cleanser are mainly minerals, such as Magnesium Aluminum Silicate, Illite Diatomaceous Earth (microalgae), and Kaolin. Kaolin helps decongest pores, while microalgae exfoliates. The exfoliator in this cleanser is not only physical, but also chemical because it contains Phytic Acid. It also contains fruit and extracts, such as Ginkgo Biloba, Papaya, Lavender, and Raspberry. It smells fruity, but a bit chemically. To be honest, I am not a fan of the scent.
I tried using it once a day. I apply the cleanser to my dry face evenly. Then, I gently massage them. After that I put water on my hand and massage it to my face until it forms foaming lather. Then, rinse with water. I found that my face is immediately feel soft and smooth right after cleansing. I knew that it is because of the physical scrubs. At first I enjoy using it, but then I think it is too much hassle to use it everyday, especially in the morning. I also feel that my skin is too tight after cleansing because this cleanser are meant for normal to oily and combination skin while my skin in on the drier side. So, will I purchase the big one? I think No.
3. Fresh Rose Hydrating Gel Cream
It is very small, but it is very expensive. Here I purchase the sample size containing only 5 ml for 80.000 IDR at an online store. But, that is not surprising if you know Fresh. All of its products are very expensive, at least for me. I don’t think Sephora sell deluxe size of this Gel Cream. Sephora only sell one size, which is 50 ml, for 40 USD. For such a small amount of products, I can’t say enough that it is pricey.
I wanted to buy it because I have dry skin, so hydration is a must. Fresh Rose Hydrating Gel Cream, as the name suggest, is a daily moisturizer that claims to provide 24-hours of moisture. Even though it is hydrating gel, they say that any skin type can use this product. This gel is hydrating because the main ingredients is hyaluronic acid, which is believed to seal in moisture in our skin. It also contains rose water that soothes skin. I admit that the gel feel soothing when I put it on my skin.
I tried wearing them in the morning as the last second step before sunscreen. The gel gives a cooling effect to my skin. It will feel tacky for a while before it sinks into skin. I don’t think I would suggest this product for oily skin. I neither love nor hate this product because I haven’t seen the result on my skin. So, will I purchase the big one? I think no because there are a lot more affordable moisturizer that gives hydration to skin.
4. Etude House Soonjung 2x Barrier Intensive Cream
I got it for free from my sisters. She purchased some products from Etude and she got 3 samples of this Soonjung 2x Barrier Intensive Cream. At first, I took it for granted. I thought that this product would do nothing to my skin. However, after I do some googling and youtube-ing, some people and even some influencers love this cream. I also found out that this cream is not cheap. The regular size which contains 60 ml costs 18 USD.
This cream is claimed to moisturize as well as strengthen skin’s resistance with protein barrier. It is formulated with panthenol that is believed to deliver hydration. The ingredient that will repair skin damage is madecassoside. It is actually derived from the infamous Centella asiatica. If you are familiar with Korean skincare products, you will know that Centella is one of the popular ingredients.
The cream is thick and creamy. It really hydrates and plumps my skin. I prefer this kind of moisturizer rather than gel. Because it is thick, I don’t need much product. I love using it before putting sunscreen. Will I purchase the big one? Yes.
5. Innisfree Orchid Enriched Cream
I always love brands which give free samples at checkout. One of my most favorite is Innisfree. During my first transaction in Innisfree Indonesia, I applied the membership and got a set of samples containing their best sellers. This Orchid Enriched Cream is among them. I have already known their Orchid line from Joan Kim on Youtube who loves their Orchid Eye Cream. At first I regret why they gave me this cream instead of their eye cream. I was really skeptical, but I was wrong. I love this cream.
This anti-aging cream that made with Jeju orchids make my skin look healthier. It really gives a glow to my face. The orchid is believed to act as antioxidant that makes skin radiant. I love wearing this as night cream. It keeps my dry skin hydrated even until morning. The texture of this cream is somewhat feel like gel. It is rich but light so that my skin absorbs it fast. I also like the scent. However, if you don’t like product with strong scent, you might dislike this cream. So, will I repurchase? Of course! I already have a new one in regular size.
